Our Young Paddlesport Instructors

Did you know that the BCAB Paddlesport Instructor course is open to anyone aged 14 or over?

The 2-day BCAB Paddlesport Instruction course helps you develop practical skills such as kitting up a group and getting afloat, initial familiarisation activities, games and activities to support learning and how to use mini journeys to support learning, inspire adventure and exploration. Setting you up to run taster/introductory sessions within clubs or centres. It is all about safely having fun in and on a mixed craft session in a very sheltered location. Sessions are based mainly on games and challenges which encourage the group to explore options and what works best for them.

Paddlesport Instructors are often the first point of contact for newcomers to our sport, and play a really important role. First impressions from these sessions can have a lasting impact on the likelihood of the person returning to do more in the future. Delivering sessions that are safe, enjoyable and rewarding are cornerstones of the Paddlesport Instructor role, and threads that run through all elements of the course.

Not only does the qualification help get you started delivering sessions, for many it is the first step on the qualification pathway. The course is open to people who have basic paddling skills in kayak, open canoe, sit on top, or stand up paddleboard. You’ll need to feel comfortable getting around where you want to go in/on your preferred craft, in calm benign conditions, close to easy bank-side access.

Prior to the course you’ll also need to have completed your Foundation Safety and Rescue training. This is a one-day course that provides training on key skills needed to operate safely and deal with common emergencies in a sheltered water environment. This will help you develop the basic rescue skills required to complete the Paddlesport Instructor course.

"Young people are awesome Paddlesport Instructors. They bring such amazing energy and can really relate to the groups of children and young people they often deliver too. They provide role model behaviour and make the skills achievable. Playing in water is something that can be drilled out of adults but not with young people. Their willingness to get wet and have fun means their three dimensional skill progresses quickly. This brings great confidence which is transferable to adults they are introducing to our sport”. Mags Duncan, Paddlesport Instructor Tutor.

“This entry level course can be accessed from the age of 14 which is ideal for the many clubs who have members looking for a route into coaching which in turn supports the clubs paddling development and potentially makes the paddlesport instructor a very employable individual should they wish to seek a living from this profession”. Jim Gibson, Paddlesport Instructor Tutor.

Hearing from our young Paddlesport Instructors...

Eilidh Hay

Eilidh Hay achieved her Paddlesport Instructor - Kayak qualification, completing the course with Steve Mackinnon and Kirsten Petrie at Lossiemouth when she was 15 years old.

Tell us a bit about how you got into paddling?

I have been paddling since the age of two and have enjoyed going on adventures with family and friends ever since. I have kayaked in the most beautiful places from the Icey lochs and rivers in Scotland to cliffs and caves in Spain.

What do you love about paddling?

I love exploring the most extraordinary landscapes and challenging myself with exciting and sometimes scary rapids.

Why did you do the Paddlesport Instructor Course?

I was inspired by my mum as I wanted to be just as crazy for the outdoors as she is. I also wanted to share my love for the sport with others so they can hopefully get as much out of the nature and the adrenaline as I do.

What was good about the course?

I learned many new skills, like the essential safety and rescue techniques as well as how to make activities fun and engaging for others.

Tell us a bit about any Paddlesport Instructing you have done since?

As a new instructor for Outfit Moray, I have been involved in many sessions, assisted, and independently teaching a variety of activities.

What do you think needs to be done to get more young people to get into instructing?

I feel the opportunities for young people to volunteer in outdoor settings would provide them the skills required in order to progress through the qualifications system.

What are your ambitions moving forwards?

As of now I am only able to teach activities from a kayak, so my aim is to gain qualifications to be able to teach from a variety of craft.

Lewis Keith

Lewis Keith, achieved his Paddlesport Instructor - Kayak qualification, completing the course at Willowgate Activity Centre when he was 14 years old.

Tell us a bit about how you got into paddling?

I got the opportunity to go down to Willowgate Activity Centre with my best friend when I was 12 years old.

What do you love about paddling?

I love paddling because of the thrill and the freedom you have on the water. I have met some amazing people throughout the time I have been kayaking.

Why did you do the Paddlesport Instructor Course?

The person who inspired me the most is Adam Burns the manager of Willowgate Activity Centre. When I learn a new skill the way it makes me feel - I wanted  to make other people feel like that as well.

What was good about the course?

The people who I did the course with were enthusiastic and had a great sense of humour and I learned some amazing things from them.

Tell us a bit about any Paddlesport Instructing you have done since?

I help run sessions with the Kayak Club at Willowgate and help with kayak tasters sessions as well.

What do you think needs to be done to get more young people to get into instructing?

I know the satisfaction that I get from doing this and I want to share that enthusiasm with others. When you are giving people tips and helping others and you’re not afraid of making your voice heard, this is a great way to let others know that they could be instructors too.

We could put stuff on facebook telling people about the course which is a good way to reach a lot of people but doesn’t really cost any money,

What are your ambitions moving forwards?

I have done all the qualifications I can until I'm sixteen :(. When I'm 16 I'm going to do my Whitewater Leader, so I can come along with a group and help lead them down the river safely. I want to pursue this as a career when I am older. My goal is to work at Glenmore Lodge in Aviemore.
