Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport Course (CWPS)

Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport (CWPS) is the primary training course available in Scotland for adults working or volunteering with children in sport.  

  • Who is this course for

    This course is suitable for anyone 16 years and over who are in regulated work, delivering or leading sporting activities with children under 18. This meets the minimum requirement for Coaches and Leaders required for Update status. 

  • Module 1

    Module 1 is an elearning completed in your own time prior to Module 2 live session. 

    After precourse module 1 you will be able to:

    • Understand what is meant by ‘child wellbeing and protection’
    • Recognise the value of a child-centred approach to child wellbeing and Protection
    • Identify good practice in relation to child wellbeing and protection and how this impacts the sports environment
    • Recognise the legislative and policy framework around child wellbeing and protection
    • Identify and respond to possible child wellbeing or protection concerns
    • Identify the limits of your safeguarding role and know when to get support
  • Module 2

    Module 2 is a 3 hour 'live' training course lead by one of sportscotland’s approved tutors.  It can be delivered online or face-to-face in a classroom. Learners must complete both modules to gain the qualification and receive their certificate.  


    By the end of module 2 learners will:

    • Be introduced to the Spectrum of Practice and use it to consider, evaluate and respond to common coaching scenarios
    • Receive an introduction to the factors that create a culture of poor practice
    • Identify barriers to disclosure
    • Cover the process for responding to concerns
    • Put the responding to concerns process into practice to deal with serval complex cases

  • Quick guide

    1. Book on a CWPS course via SCA or another organiser (see link buttons)
    2. Approx 2 weeks before (or 3 days before if you've booked less than 3 weeks) you'll be sent login details for Brightspace, the virtual learning platform 
    3. Access Brightspace using the username sent to you.
    4. Complete module 1 prior to the scheduled Module 2 live course 
    5. The link for Module 2 live session will be sent to you on the morning of your course
    6. After completion of Module 2, log back in to Brightspace to complete the course evaluation and download your PDF certificate.
