Questions & Answers
  • How do I register as a Grandtully Slalom User?

Register for a user pass at the same time as purchasing a Grandtully Station Park Daytime Pass by selecting the ‘Slalom Site add on’ at no extra charge.

  • Who is eligible to register as a Grandtully Slalom User?

Paddle Scotland Full or Junior members may register for an annual user pass.

Paddle England / Canoe Wales On-the-Water Members and Paddle Northern Ireland Full Members may purchase a 14 day pass only.

Non members and Club Associates are not eligible to use the Slalom site.

  • Is it only paddlers who require to register as a Grandtully Slalom User?

All slalom paddlers using the slalom gates for any form of training must be registered and checked in.

All coaches involved in slalom training (other than during Divisional Slalom Competitions and other Paddle Scotland Championship events) must be registered and checked in before any adjustment of gates can be made.

Spectators and others accessing the river & riverbank under their right of responsible access do not require to be registered as a Grandtully Slalom User or to check in.

  • Why do we need to register and check in each session?

Under the terms of the lease agreement, all users (coaches and paddlers) of the Grandtully Slalom gates are required to check in just prior to the start of each session of use. This will help monitor the volume of use and help in addressing any inappropriate conduct.

  • Does everyone in a group need to be a registered Grandtully Slalom User and check in?

All paddlers and coaches using the gates are required to check in except during the actual days of approved Paddle Scotland events which include ranking slalom competitions and other Paddle Scotland-approved events e.g. Paddle Scotland Slalom Championships.

Club Secretaries or Club Event Coordinators (with permissions set in JustGo) are able to complete the check in process for all paddlers at once for slalom use outside of Paddle Scotland-approved events.

  • Who is required to be a registered Grandtully Slalom User?

It is a condition of the lease agreement with the landowner for Paddle Scotland to have a register of all users of the Grandtully Slalom gates. The register of users is linked to the purchase of a Grandtully Station Park Daytime Pass.

  • Why is there a need to check in for each session?

This forms a requirement of the lease agreement. All those making any use of the slalom gates must check in at the start of each session.

  • Are recreational paddlers, rafters and other river users required to register as a Grandtully Slalom User?

Only those using the Grandtully Slalom gates (slalom paddlers and coaches) are required to register. Other paddlers, river users and those taking access to the riverbank do not require any permission if they are acting in line with their rights under Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003.

  • Why am I being charged to park at Grandtully Station Park?

Day use charges for the use of the facilities at GSP have been in place for 20+ years - both on a per visit basis and on an annual basis. Following the significant refurbishment and expansion of the facilities, we’re updating the format of daytime fees.

  • I am only wanting to paddle slalom for the day. Do I need to register as a Grandtully Slalom User?

Visitor parking and facility use fees will apply at Grandtully Station Park upon reopening of the site. However, in order to use the slalom site, all users must be one of:

    • Paddle Scotland Full/Junior member with an annual daytime pass and be a registered as a Grandtully Slalom User
    • A member of Paddle England, Paddle Northern Ireland, Canoe Wales with a 14 day daytime pass and be registered as a Grandtully Slalom User
    • Taking part in a Divisional Slalom event or Paddle Scotland Championship event, where the event organiser pays a central facility fee and registers participants as Temporary Slalom users
  • What defines an event?

The following types of event require prior approval from Paddle Scotland under the normal event authorisation process

    • Any Paddle UK Slalom Ranking Event
    • Any Paddle Scotland championship or ranking event
  • What about club training camps?

Clubs or groups planning to make use of the Grandtully Slalom site for training camps or day visits do not need to gain event approval. However, all paddlers and coaches must have a registered Grandtully Slalom User (14 day or annual) and be checked in prior to use.

A club secretary or event organiser with permissions in JustGo is able to check in all participants in one action.

  • What happens if someone uses the slalom gates and they are not registered?

It is a condition of the lease agreement for all users to be registered with Paddle Scotland and to check in prior to each use. Anyone found to be breaching any of the Terms and conditions of use may face disciplinary action.

Any breaches of the lease agreement may result in a temporary suspension of use or permanent loss of this facility.

  • Can members of Paddle England, Northern Ireland or Wales use the Grandtully Slalom Site?

On-the-Water members of other National Associations may purchase a 14 day Daytime pass for Grandtully Station Park and register as a Grandtully Slalom User for 14 days.

Annual passes / registration are not available for members of other National Associations.

If required, members of other National Associations may purchase a 14 day pass each time they wish to use the Grandtully Slalom gates.

  • What if I see someone using the site who has not registered and/or checked in?

Any breaches place Paddle Scotland’s lease at risk. Please report any potential breaches to hello@paddlescotland.org.uk or follow the Whistleblowing Policy. All registered users (annual) will be sent a Digital Pass to download to Apple or Google Wallet.

  • Can I access the Riverside Hut?

The hut is reserved for use at events.

During events, event officials may use the hut for storing equipment and managing the competition.

The hut must not be used to store, prepare, sell or otherwise make available any food or drinks. This is forbidden under our lease agreement.

The hut must not be used for any overnight sleeping.

Event organisers wishing to access the hut should make this request via the event approval process.

  • Can I store my boat at Grandtully?

There are currently no storage facilities available either at the Grandtully Slalom site or at Grandtully Station Park. Upon completion of the development project, there may be an opportunity for individuals to pay for boat storage.

  • Where should vehicles be parked whilst using the Slalom site?

All vehicles for users of the site should be parked at Grandtully Station Park unless other parking has been arranged or users are utilising other local facilities/businesses. This results from numerous complaints in recent times from locals and businesses. Please be courteous to the local community.

  • Can I access the North Bank (opposite bank from the Grandtully village)?

Access to North bank is restricted under the lease agreement. Only judges who are required to position on the North bank are permitted to do so. Further details will be provided to event organisers.

  • Is there a discount for purchasing the annual pass part way through the year?

There is no discount for part-year purchase, other than in year 1 (2024) where the fee is £10.

  • When will an annual pass expire?

All annual passes will expire at the end of the day on the 31st of December in the year of purchase.

  • When will a 14 day pass expire?

14 day passes will commence immediately upon purchase and will expire at the end of day 14.

  • Why have there been historical charges for day use?

Since the “green building” was constructed and opened up for use in May 2003 day use charges have been in place for using Grandtully Station Park. These were introduced so that those that were not staying overnight on the campsite would contribute towards the cost of running and maintaining the car park, toilets and showers. Some people paid per-visit whilst it suited others to pay annually - individuals as well as paddlesport providers/organisations. When medium and large events took place organisers paid a fee for use of the site, which also contributed towards the cost of additional parking areas, needed for larger events.

  • Why were there no charges for day use 2020-2024?

In 2020 the building was required to be closed to all users. As we came out of COVID restrictions, we were fortunate that Paddle Scotland staff successfully obtained NatureScot grants 2021-2023, which allowed us to provide free-of-charge use of the toilets and car park for both the public and for members. From July 2023 to June 2024 the whole site has been closed for building works and no facilities have been provided.

  • Why have day use charges been reinstated in 2024?

Paddle Scotland has been fortunate to receive several grants for the facility improvement project which have enabled the refurbishment of the existing facilities and the construction of additional facilities. These are “capital” grants towards the building work costs and were secured on the understanding that Paddle Scotland will continue to raise revenue from both camping and day use activities, to ensure that the new facilities are sustainable and will be available for people to enjoy well into the future.

  • What costs do day use charges contribute to?

    • Water and sewage costs for the green building
    • Electricity for the heating and lighting for the green building
    • Maintain the car park, filling in potholes, replacing gravel and weed killing
    • Litter picking the car park and removing dog fouling
    • Emptying the bins and the removal of recycling and refuse from site
    • Contribution towards management of the car park and green building
    • Strimming of the banks around the car park
    • Contribution towards the broadband provided for the car park, both the ISP and the infrastructure required to broadcast the wifi
    • Cleaning of the green building
    • Toilet paper, soap and hand sanitizer in the green building
    • Legionella testing in green building
    • Repairs, maintenance and decoration of the green building
    • Rates, building insurance and civil liability insurance for that part of the site

Lease Management Group

As part of the new lease arrangements, a new lease management group has been formed comprising representatives from Paddle Scotland, Grandtully and Strathtay Community Council and landowner. The purpose of this group is to work together to ensure that the use of the leased area is in accordance with the terms of the Lease Agreement and with good estate management in mind, and to liaise in respect of dates and sizes for events and competitions.

Organisers of events are requested to submit event plans ideally 6+ months ahead.
