Young Paddlesport Instructors: Eilidh Wood

August 1, 2024

Get to know some of Paddle Scotland's young paddlesport instructors! Today it's all about Eilidh Wood.

Tell us a bit about how you got into paddling?

I did some taster sessions at Fife Canoeing Activities Group with my Dad five years ago and really enjoyed it so have since joined the club properly as have my sisters and have become much more involved in the club.

What do you love about paddling?

I love paddling because it allows me to meet new people who share similar interests to me and it allows me to explore places I wouldn't otherwise be able to. I also love that I am able to challenge myself when on the water, and boost my confidence.

Why did you do the Paddlesport Course?
I did my PSI because I want to become more involved in running activities within the club as it was something I had already started to be involved in and was enjoying but wanted to do more of.

What was good about the course?

I did my PSI at Willowgate in February so the rescues weren't particularly fun but I enjoyed learning how to properly structure a session and then getting a feel for running activities within the environment of the course.

Tell us a bit about any Paddlesport Instructing you have done since?

Since doing my PSI I haven't done loads of sessions but I was involved in running an open day at Lochore at the end of April with some of the other instructors from the club.

What do you think needs to be done to get more young people to get into instructing?

I think a lot has been done over the recent years with courses for Under 18's which I think has really helped these qualifications to feel more approachable and I think that if this continues it will help encourage more young people to sign up for these courses.

What are your ambitions moving forwards?

I am currently working through my courses to become a coach which I would like to hopefully complete by the end of 2025 so that I can continue to be more involved in running activities and sessions within my club, along with running more sessions and becoming more confident when running sessions.

Paddlesport Instructor Training Course - more info

The BCAB Paddlesport Instructor course is open to anyone aged 14 or over. This two day course helps you develop practical skills to support learning, inspire adventure and exploration, and sets you up to run taster/introductory sessions within clubs or centres.

Paddlesport Instructors are often the first point of contact for newcomers to our sport, and play a really important role. First impressions from these sessions can have a lasting impact on the likelihood of the person returning to do more in the future. Delivering sessions that are safe, enjoyable and rewarding are cornerstones of the Paddlesport Instructor role, and threads that run through all elements of the course.

Not only does this qualification help get you started delivering sessions, for many it is the first step on the formal qualification pathway. The course is open to people who have basic paddling skills in kayak, open canoe, sit on top, or stand up paddleboard. You’ll need to feel comfortable getting around where you want to go in/on your preferred craft, in calm benign conditions, close to easy bank-side access.
