We are delighted to celebrate the successful completion of the first British Canoeing Awarding Body (BCAB) Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Instructor course in Scotland, at Willowgate Activity Centre. The course is designed to equip aspiring instructors with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach SUP to beginners in taser sessions.
Led by Adam Burns, the course covered a wide range of practical topics including safety procedures, kitting up a group and getting afloat, initial familiarisation activities, games and activities and how to use mini journeys to support learning, inspire adventure and exploration. Through the 2-day course, participants gained hands-on experience in the water, honing their skills and practising their techniques under the guidance of an experienced tutor.
The launch of this course marks a significant milestone for SUP in Scotland. We have seen a growing demand for SUP lessons in recent years, driven in part by the increasing popularity of the sport as a fun, low-impact way to enjoy Scotland's stunning coastline and waterways.

We spoke to some of the course participants to get there thoughts on the day.
“I found the course to suit my personal needs perfectly. I am planning on taking school pupils out for taster sessions on The Union Canal, Adam was able to pitch the course content and materials just right for what I require. Adam is very experienced in delivering this type of qualification and was able to pass on lots of valuable information and techniques to me as a teacher. His teaching style worked well as we were able to learn in a "hands on" style and consolidate in the classroom”

“I found the course excellent, very informative, practical, it didn't fry my brain with overly complicated stuff, the syllabus was delivered in a fun and active way, I think we all learnt from each other. It's a good starting block for anyone interested in teaching SUP. I was a bit apprehensive going into the weekend but I'm really glad I did.
Next I am focusing on building up some more experience and knowledge; I'm looking at completing the Paddle Safer and SUP safer courses as this will allow me to further my skills and experience and then hopefully towards the end of the year and beginning of 2024 then look into maybe the Leadership awards”
Gareth.
“I did the SUP Instructor Course because I want to be able to coach other young people and share my passion. I also want to support Willowgate with the Additional Support Needs group. My kayak club instructor Dave inspired me to support everyone that wants to paddle regardless of ability, age or gender.
I particularly enjoyed learning how to work with different people and how to adapt my coaching style depending on the group.
I would like to get more experience in working with various groups at Willowgate and shadowing their instructors. I hope to do more paddling qualifications in the future. I would really like to encourage more young girls to the sport as it has really helped my mental health”
