The international panel has announced the selected teams for the 2023 internationals following a tough weekend of racing at the Lee Valley Whitewater centre. Scottish paddlers were front and centre in many of the classes being raced with successful performances in both Slalom and Kayak Cross.
This year the racing format was a 5 race Slalom series with 2 races each day on Saturday and Sunday followed by a decisive 5th race on Monday morning. This was then topped off by a 2 run Kayak Cross time trial with athletes fighting for a single remaining spot in each Kayak Cross class.
Current performance squad members Oscar Wyllie and Murray Robb took things right to the line in their Junior K1M selection race, leaving the outcome unknown til the last race of the long weekend. Holding their nerve and with others struggling to do the same, both managed to deliver solid final runs, earning them 2nd and 3rd place in the selection series respectively. Having two of the three person junior kayak team coming from the Scottish Performance Squad was a highlight of the weekend and a strong testament to the work and commitment that both athletes have put in throughout the winter training.
Following from the retirement of high profile, successful athletes Fiona Pennie, Bradley Forbes-Cryans and David Florence it was up to the next generation of Scottish Talent to continue their progression in the sport, which they did across the board, enduring the inevitable nerves of this selection series.
