What is it all about?
Developing the confidence and the ability to safely plan and lead club events. This opportunity is aimed at university and college club members of all abilities to increase their skills and knowledge and to equip those who are in a position of responsibility in a club with safety and leadership principles which will filter down to club members. We also encourage students new to paddlesports to attend as there will be opportunities to experience a variety of environments and disciplines throughout the weekend.
Who is it for?
Students! The SCA and Glenmore Lodge are proud to organise a Safety & Leadership training weekend, specifically aimed at Scottish University & College students in one of the SCA affiliated clubs. Where students and university clubs will be empowered to paddle safely, lead fun events, and plan compelling activities. To attend the event you must be an SCA member and linked to one of the 11 affiliated student clubs.
What is it?
A sociable weekend of paddling, developing on/off water safety skills, and developing leadership opportunities within the exciting world of paddle sport.
Why join?
The perfect opportunity to build leadership skills and on/off water safety experiences. With this course you will gain the confidence and ability to safely organise trips and events within the paddling world, be it: Sea Kayaking, Open Water Canoeing, or White Water paddling.
When?
The weekend kicks off Friday evening (13th - 15th October), with an optional dinner and workshops. Followed by an action packed schedule for Saturday and Sunday.
Cost
This is a subsidised event supported by Scottish Canoe Association and Glenmore Lodge to support student clubs to improve safety and leadership. The total cost for the residential weekend is £75, discounted to £60 for bookings before 31st July.
The package includes Friday and Saturday night B&B, Friday night workshop, Saturday and Sunday full day workshops, transport during the event, Saturday evening dinner, lunch, refreshments and cake on both days, access to equipment if required.
Dinner on Friday evening is not included.
Where?
We are delighted to hold this year’s event at the National Outdoor Training Centre,
Glenmore Lodge ‘the heart of the Cairngorms’. Which is easily reached by a variety of
transport types. We encourage sustainable travel and plan to offer a pick-up from Aviemore train station on Friday late afternoon early evening, returning on Sunday early evening. We also encourage car sharing.

Planning Trips Abroad
Learn country's access laws or whether or not permits have to be sought before you can get onto a river. With this classroom based workshop, we will look at the important logistics and requirements of planning a university paddling trip abroad.
Organising River Trips
Discover where to get river levels from or how fast a river might spike after rain. Prior planning is really important to the success of any river trip, this classroom based workshop will examine all the vital pieces of information that are required to plan a successful and safe river trip. Preparing Trips in the Sea
Do you find you are a little unsure of weather and tide predictions or uncertain of the places to look for these vital pieces of information? This classroom based workshop with demystify tidal prediction and wether forecasting will give you some of the tools needed to plan a confident and successful trip on the sea.
Writing Operating Plans for Your Club
A well thought out set of operating providers is vital to the success of any club. This classroom based workshop will work through the important content to include in a club's operating plan and look at ways in which we can store, share and develop emergency action details.
Paddlesport Safety & Rescue
This practical workshop aims to provide paddlers with the key safety and rescue skills required to operate safely and be able to deal with common problems that occur in the shelter water environment. During the day we will explore simple strategies and safe skills that can provide the tools to solve problems. Time will be dedicated to get out our boats, and into the water: learning vital techniques to self rescue and rescue others in a multitude of craft.
White Water Safety
This practical workshop is designed for all paddlers who operate in the white water environment (kayak, canoe and SUP). It aims to teach simple and practical safety and rescue skills that can be applied appropriately to a moderate white water environment. The majority of the content of this workshop is delivered by hand on practical sessions simulating a number of different scenarios of problems found on white water, supported by short riverside periods covering theoretical content.
Sea Kayak Safety & Rescue
This practical workshop aims to provide paddlers with key safety and rescue skills required to operate safely and be able to deal with common problems on the sea in both the sheltered and moderate conditions. Paddlers will explore simple strategies and safe skills that can provide the tools to solve common paddling issues on the sea including towing, self rescue and assisting others.
Experiance Intermediate White Water Paddling
This practical workshop is aimed at intermediate paddlers who are looking for sound sfaty practice. We will learn about stratagies and tactics invovled in running Grade 3.
Experience Advanced White Water Paddling
This day on the river will allow participants to experience a more challenging white water environment. We will learn about strategies and tactics involved in running Grade 4 and explore ways in which we can be dynamic with our risk assessments and safety management.
Experience Sea Kayaking in Wind, Tide, and Waves
The aim of this workshop is to expose ourselves to a higher level of tide, wind and waves. During this trip we will learn the skills required to control your boat in a moderate to advanced sea environment and learn about tactics involved in rock hopping, surf and difficult landings.
An introduction to Paddlesports Leadership
This practical workshop is aimed at paddlers who wish to lead groups of mixed craft on both wind affected and slow moving sheltered water. We will explore leadership strategies and practice techniques which will keep a range of disciplines safe on a trip.
White Water Kayak Leadership
This practical workshop is aimed at developing both personal skills and leadership ability in the moderate white water environment, grade 2 (3). We will explore the tactics involved in good leadership and take time to develop our own understanding of our role as a leader on the white water.
Advanceed White Water Leadership
This practical workshop is aimed at developing the personal skills and leadership ability in the advanced white water environment, grade 3 (4) white water. We will further explore the tactics involved in good leadership, decision making and professional judgement.
Canoe Leadership
This practical workshop is aimed at paddlers who wish to lead groups on open water river journeys in canoes. We will explore the tactics involved in good leadership, discuss the leadership model and how we fit that into our day on the journey. We will also explore decision making in relation to venue choice, groups ability etc.
Sea Kayak Leadership
This practical workshop is aimed at paddlers who wish to lead groups on ocean journeys in a moderate sea environment, (wind F4, tide 2kts, 1m swell). We will explore the tactics involved in good leadership and the strategies we can use to be a successful leader in the sea. Time will also be spent exploring the leadership model and how we can use ethos to good effect on the sea.
