Stand Up Paddleboarding is one of the fastest growing sports in Scotland and the UK, and has now been recognised as a discipline of paddlesport with the SCA awarded status as an official sport governing body for SUP in Scotland. This announcement was confirmed recently by sportscotland and signifies a significant milestone for both the SCA and the SUP community in Scotland.
Stand Up Paddleboarding has gained immense popularity in recent years, attracting enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. In the last two years there has been a 92% increase in the number of Scottish residents paddleboarding at least three times a year, with over 100,000 adults in Scotland participating in the sport in 2022. The 2021 SCA Club of the Year was a SUP-specific club, and the number of SUP participants accessing British Canoeing Awarding Body regulated qualifications and awards has been steadily on the rise.
This recognition is a testament to the Scottish Canoe Association's long-standing dedication to paddlesport and promoting safety and excellence in the many paddlesport disciplines. With its wealth of experience and expertise in canoeing, kayaking and other disciplines, the SCA is well-positioned to guide and support the growth of SUP throughout Scotland.
"We are thrilled to have been granted joint status as one of the governing bodies for Stand Up Paddleboarding in Scotland alongside SSF," said Andy Murray, Head of Coaching and Development at the Scottish Canoe Association. "This recognition reflects the hard work and passion of our community, and we are excited to further develop SUP in Scotland. Our aim is to ensure that SUP enthusiasts of all levels can enjoy this fantastic sport safely and responsibly while also respecting and preserving our natural waterways."
Scottish Canoe Association will work with British Canoeing and Canoe Wales who have also gained recognition in their respective countries, as well as the Scottish Surfing Federation and other key stakeholders, to enhance relationships and build collaborative partnerships for the benefit of the SUP community and recreational paddlers who enjoy Stand Up Paddleboarding. The possible Olympic discipline of SUP remains under the governance of the SSF. The SCA will collaborate closely with local clubs, coaches, instructors, leaders and enthusiasts to enhance the SUP experience across Scotland.
