Reaching Out Online to the Current and Future Paddlers

June 10, 2020

Using live broadcast to provide useful paddling information during the lockdown, Piotr Gudan, Outdoor Explore

We all know you can't learn the paddlesport well without trying it and practising it. As these times are unprecedented, I have decided to try new ways of reaching out with useful information on the sport to inspire future paddlers.

We are trying to engage with our participants via newsletter, blog, Instagrams stories, Twitter posts but also by regular updates on WhatsApp and the specially dedicated group Explore Weekly on Facebook.

As I had a little more time on my hands in the first weeks of the lockdown, I have decided to try something new - we did set up a Saturday morning live broadcast! A little bit nervous, not sure if it will work and if anyone will even watch, engage, enjoy, we decided to use our Facebook page for it.

With just over 4000 followers on Outdoor Explore's page, it was a perfect hit.
The subject of this broadcast was a very common question people ask me - what to pack for a kayaking day trip?

We not only presented what we carried for the sea, touring or white water kayaking and canoeing, we also managed to answer many questions coming through and follow up after the broadcast. A truly great result!

We have used the footage gathered to create a short clip uploaded to YouTube and added a relevant blog post as well. You can find both here:

We decided to make it a weekly 'meet up' now, sharing more useful information. Next week we talked about where to go paddling and how to gain the facts about access points, locations, SCA advice, water levels and the environment.

The most recent one was about which boat is right for you. Helping those looking into buying a new or second-hand craft.

You can check what is coming next on our Facebook page, or by signing up to our newsletter from the website, or simply by contacting us on email or 07904 324 102.

It's pretty interesting that even during the lockdown we managed to inspire future paddlers, share information about the access, kit, the SCA and good practices despite not meeting with people.

Definitely I can't wait to paddle with them in the future but how amazing it is to learn new IT skills and share the passion for the sport you love so much!
