Obstructions - Grandtully Rapid - River Tay

July 31, 2023

The SCA has become aware that unauthorised structures/barriers have recently been constructed in the Grandtully rapid.

These are across sections of the flow on both sides of the river, downstream of the main fall and upstream of ‘magnetic rock’. There are two of them river left and the remainder are on the right, in front of the Inn on the Tay.

There are several safety concerns based on their location, the rough concrete and stones that have been used, the unknown quality of construction and the fact that they are new and unexpected. Depending on the river level, some of them may be beneath the water.

Anyone descending the Tay or just paddling at Grandtully is advised to exercise extreme caution on the rapid, now that it has been changed. The photos give an indication of the size and location of some of these obstructions at 0.6m on the
SEPA gauge.

Police Scotland, SEPA, NatureScot and Perth & Kinross Council are in the process of investigating. Unauthorised works in rivers are prohibited and the SCA reminds everyone of this.

The SCA will update everyone regarding this situation and its impact on future planned events as soon as information is available.
