Now Recruiting - Paddlesport Instructor Tutors

February 25, 2022

The SCA is now recruiting for Paddlesport Instructor Tutors. This is our first round of recruitment since Autumn 2018.

We are specifically looking to recruit people who are experienced in delivering taster sessions to paddlers in canoe, kayak and/or SUP (but accept that you might not have worked with all three types of craft). We are also looking to diversify our tutor workforce so it better reflects the demographic of people likely to be attending taster sessions. However we welcome applicants from anyone who is active in delivering taster sessions, and who has access to a market place of potential candidates on courses, particularly where that market place reaches our minority populations.

Are you:

  • A qualified coach in two of Canoe, Kayak and SUP?
  • Competent in Canoe, Kayak and SUP?
  • Experienced and passionate about running taster/starter sessions?
  • Great at coaching rescue skills using a variety of crafts?
  • Committed to developing skills to facilitate great learning and assessment experiences?

If the answer is ‘YES’, then we need you!

Applications must be received before noon (12:00) 24th March 2022.

Please complete this application form if you wish to apply for the role of Paddlesport Instructor Tutor. You will not be able to save your application and return to it so you may find it helpful to prepare your answers separately and then paste in. See the attached Word version.

If you have any questions about the role, the application process, or if you would like support/advice to help you complete your application please contact lara.cooper@canoescotland.org

What happens next?

We will contact you by 31st March to inform you of the outcome.  If successful you will need to complete some pre-reading and attend a 3-hour online orientation event.

Online Orientation 25th April 18:00 - 21:00

There is also a practical 2-day face-to-face orientation event to support the development of your understanding of the course and it’s delivery. This is compulsory for some applicants, optional for others (this is dependent on qualifications/experience):

Practical Face-to-Face Orientation : 14th & 15th May | Willowgate Activity Centre, Perth

During the orientation events you will be working alongside other aspirant providers and a National Trainer.

The orientation fee will be based on the type of orientation required; £50 online orientation only, £250 for the 2-day face-to-face orientation.

Action Plan

Following the orientation events you will have an Individual Action Plan that will include any required actions or conditions identified and further professional development as required. In most cases you will have “Aspirant Paddlesport Instructor” status and be able to second staff courses immediately. This may not be the case if you have ‘essential’ elements from your application to attend to.

Trainer Recommendation

The process is concluded with confirmation that your delivery meets required standards by a person authorised to make a final recommendation, that is then validated by SCA. This normally takes place through the observation of you delivering a Paddlesport Instructor course with a recognised provider. You are then granted the ‘full’ role and able to deliver Paddlesport Instructor courses independently.
