British Canoeing Awarding Body (BCAB) has launched five new modules to enhance your paddling knowledge and skills:

  • Weather: Learn to interpret weather forecasts and understand how different conditions can affect your trips. Relevant to any paddler, paddling on inland or coastal waters.
  • Tides: Gain knowledge of tidal movements and their impact on paddling in estuaries and coastal waters.
  • Surf and Swell: Understand ground and wind swell, surf forecasting, how tide races, overfalls and rip currents impact on surf and swell and how to plan safe trips/sessions.
  • Navigation for Paddlers: Master map, chart, and compass use for effective route planning and safe navigation - pretrip and whilst on the water.. Ideal for anyone navigating on the water, including sea and river paddlers, stand up paddleboarders, clubs, coaches and leaders.
  • Open Crossings: Learn to plan and execute safe open water crossings in both tidal and non-tidal waters Designed for more experienced paddlers planning crossings in both tidal and non-tidal waters. Tutor-led delivery provides an opportunity for interaction and hands-on learning that is tailored to your needs and interests. Tutors will provide an engaging learning environment with real-time discussion and practical exercises, real-life examples. You will get individualised feedback and clarification on questions alongside networking with peers, sharing experiences and learning from others. This high quality learning environment will really help you develop your learning and grasp more complex topics.

Aspiring Leaders

Please note these modules replace the Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning (CNTP) and Open Water Navigation and Tidal Planning (OWNTP) which are no longer available. If you are working towards Sea Kayak Leader, SUP Coastal Leader and SUP Tidal Leader require either CNTP or four of the new modules (all except Open Crossing Module). Those working towards advanced Sea Kayak Leader require OWNTP, all five modules, or CNTP + Open Crossing Modules.

eLearning alternative

The content of the modules can also be accessed through eLearning. Whilst eLearning  is a useful tool for introducing topics or refreshing learning we highly recommend tutor led learning to ensure you have the skills required for the role and for your Leadership assessment. You can find the modules in the BCAB eLearning store.
