List your Club on the Leap Sports Club Finder
LEAP Sports Scotland (Leadership, Equality and Active Participation in Sports for LGBTI people in Scotland) works for greater inclusion for LGBTI people in sport and against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in a sports context. We are committed to breaking down the structural, social and personal barriers which prevent lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people across the country from accessing, participating and excelling in Scottish sports”.
Part of their mission is to support the development of LGBTI or LGBTI-friendly sports clubs. With things like;
- Club promotion
- Advice and guidance
- Training and workshops
- Representation at conferences and events
As part of this they have a club finder and it is super easy to get your club listed.
Edinburgh Kayak Club have led the way and are currently the only paddlesport club listed…
“I first became aware of LEAP and their Sports Club Finder in 2015 when I was planning the first LGBTQ+ event for Edinburgh Kayak Club. The Club Finder is both for exclusively LGBTQ+ sports clubs and for clubs who strive to create an LGBTQ+ inclusive environment.
I think it would be great for clubs, and paddle sports in general, if other paddle sports clubs were listed in the LEAP Sports Club Finder, and it would help to show the LGBTQ+ community that ‘Everyone Belongs on the Water!’” Mags Elliot, Edinburgh Kayak Club, Equality and Diversity Champion.
This quick and simple action taken by the club, had a significant impact on one member, who probably wouldn’t have joined the club without it;
“When I moved back to Scotland, the first thing I did was look at the LEAP website to find a kayak club to join. I have had some “not so kind” experiences in the past with other clubs and have always had to do the work myself and look at the clubs inclusion policies before contacting them. I was lucky that I lived in Edinburgh as Edinburgh Kayak Club is the only club on their website. By joining the LEAP sport directory, you will be proactively breaking down barriers for LGBTQIA+ to participate and excel in Scottish water sports and probably meet some super awesome people in the process!” MJ Somerville, SCA LGBTQ+ Equality Group Member.
