Club Volunteer Conference (CVC) Report 2024

April 25, 2024

The annual Club Volunteer Conference (CVC) took place last weekend at Glenmore Lodge.

This year's event saw 75 volunteers from 31 clubs gather at Glenmore Lodge in Aviemore to sharpen their skills and share their passion for all things paddling.

The weekend started with evening workshops on rope work, coastal navigation, and the history of white water kayaking, eager to delve deeper into the technical and historical aspects of paddling sports. The learning was balanced with a welcomed social gathering in the bar and as the day concluded the Paddle Scotland's Young Ambassadors ran a fundraising quiz which provided a perfect blend of education about all things paddlesports while raising money for their upcoming Great Glen Expedition

The weekend offered a wide array of practical workshops tailored to a variety of interests, disciplines and skill levels. The favourable water conditions provided the perfect backdrop for sessions in Sea Kayaking, Stand Up Paddleboarding, Surf Ski Racing, Freestyle, Open Canoe, and White Water Kayak. Not to be outdone, the pool sessions were a hit with those eager to perfect their rolling and Freestyle techniques in a controlled environment.

On Saturday evening, the conference took a reflective turn with an inspiring talk from expedition kayaker Ed Ley-Wilson, who shared his experiences and insights on "Kayaking the Sea Roads." His captivating stories and valuable paddling wisdom left attendees motivated and moved, enriching their understanding of the adventurous spirit of sea kayaking and Scotland's West Coast.

A special thanks is owed to the tireless efforts of the Glenmore Lodge staff, whose dedication to warm hospitality ensured that the weekend was immensely enjoyable.

Equally deserving of gratitude are the volunteer coaches, whose generosity in sharing their expertise was the linchpin of the conference’s success. Their commitment to nurturing the skills of fellow paddlers embodies the collaborative spirit of the paddling community in Scotland.

Lastly, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the participants who brought enthusiasm and camaraderie to the conference, making it a memorable weekend for all involved. Their eagerness to learn, share, and connect with others over a shared passion for paddling was truly the highlight of the event.

As we paddle forward, let’s carry the inspiration and friendships forged at this year’s CVC into our future adventures on the water. Here’s to the continued growth of our paddling community and to many more successful gatherings to come!

In the words of some participants...

"Thanks for organising and running another great event. The programme, coaching, venue, and catering were as always amazing . The networking and socialising are added bonuses. I thoroughly enjoyed all the 3 very varied events I attended and have learned new skills that I will be taking home and sharing. I am looking forward to CVC 2025."

"Ten out of ten, from me."

"Fantastic event, just need to remember and practise everything.. one output from the environmental work was that there is little knowledge of where invasive species are and perhaps clubs could help survey in their home waters."

"The professional, encouragement, care, patience, organising and confidence building from the coaches was exceptional and very much appreciated making a real fun skill learning environment."

"I thoroughly enjoyed all three events I was placed on. Accommodation & meals/day lunches were of top quality. Lovely been out with club members again & meeting new folk."

"It was a very well run, great fun event and I definitely hope to go back next year."

"A very friendly atmosphere, meeting old friends and making new. Accommodation and food was excellent and the workshops I was on, well run and slick. Good all round experience."

"A great, well organised event. The venue is perfect for this event with excellent facilities, food and accommodation. Great opportunity to try new paddling. The quiz was good fun, just need to brush up my knowledge!"
